The X Files: Revisting An Old Friend

September 10th, 2013 will mark the 20 year anniversary of The X Files airing for the first time. I was a big fan of the show when it is was still on television and to celebrate the momentous anniversary I've been re-watching the series. It might be the nostalgia of going back or the red headed beauty that is Gillian Anderson but I have fallen back in love with this series. I never really stopped loving The X Files but I definitely moved on after the show finished in 2002. I'd watch an episode if I stumbled across it but that was it. But when I realized the 20th anniversary was approaching and a comic book version of Season 10 was coming out I decided it was time to revisit my first TV girlfriend (Xena was my 2nd).

Here's what I love most about the show:
















1. Gillian Anderson 

A 24 year old no name actress was cast in the role of Special Agent Dana Scully by show creator Chris Carter but the Fox executives wanted a "bombshell" for the role. Carter insisted that Gillian Anderson was the perfect choice for the part and the rest is history. Not only did she become a brainy bombshell (by season 4 they got Scully's wardrobe and hair right) but her skills as an actor show through all the dark and moody lighting. The part of Scully could have easily become Mulder's side kick but she was his partner, walking along side him in all his adventures, not behind him. Gillian plays her role perfectly. Smart, tough and skeptical (most of the time), depending on what the circumstances calls for or what her partner needs her to be.

2. The Chemistry

The on screen chemistry between Mulder and Scully is quite possibly the greatest in television history! This is a very lofty and biased statement but I don't care. The looks between Mulder and Scully in their most desperate moments are electric. And even though their most loving and intimate moments together usually ended in a hug or a hand squeeze or sometimes a kiss on the cheek (ooooh!) you knew they loved each other and they trusted no one but one another. What makes this all the more remarkable is that it is no secret that there was tension between the two actors behind the scenes throughout the run of the show. They openly discuss this tension. In an interview for the 2008 movie I Want To Believe, Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny both discuss the fact that even though they would go for weeks at a time without speaking to one another off camera, the on screen chemistry was never affected.

3. The Humor

The X Files could be funny. Thanks to great writing and great actors, the show was always able to pull it off. There is humor sprinkled through almost every episode, even the most dark and conspiracy-thick ones but then there were the comedies. A handful of episodes are funny, through and through. I think the show was at its funniest when it was making fun of itself. Hollywood A.D, Jose Chung's from Outer Space and Bad Blood come to mind as some of the best examples. Or when someone trades bodies with or impersonates Mulder and inevitably hits on Scully like in Dreamland and Small Potatoes. The funny episodes were a much needed break from the drama and creepiness that the show is best known for. It was a chance for the audience, and no doubt the cast and crew, to laugh a little between attacks from alien bounty hunters and disease spreading bees. 

4. The Sexual Tension

The sexual tension proved to be too strong for even Chris Carter to control and eventually Mulder and Scully hook up. Of course we aren't sure when or how exactly, that would have been too easy. They have a kid together and eventually thanks to I Want To Believe we see them living together. During the recent 20th Anniversary panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Gillian Anderson seems to remember a Mulder and Scully sex scene being shot but never used. But keeping these two characters apart would be cruel and frankly unbelievable. Chris Carter was adamant about Mulder and Scully not getting together. During the Hero Complex Film Festival Panel earlier this year Chris Carter said he was never tempted to get them together sooner but it seems like he had no problem teasing the fans with almost kisses, alternate universe (or was it a dream?) kisses and lots and lots of sexual tension. Buckets of it. 

5.  The Paranormal

The X Files was a show about the paranormal before the paranormal was everywhere. I'm not saying that The X Files was the first show about the paranormal. Chris Carter himself grew up watching shows like The Twilight Zone and Kolchak: The Night Stalker, both prime-time shows dealing with the paranormal decades before The X Files hit the air. But TXF was at the front of the paranormal wave of shows that is still crashing into our living-rooms. TXF had vampires, werewolves, witches and demons four years before Buffy The Vampire Slayer started airing in 1997. Prime-time dramas like Fringe, Lost, Supernatural (to name a few) and any number of paranormal themed reality shows have The X Files to thank for their success. Whether it was a monster of the week episode or one that was part of the alien conspiracy "mytharc", The X Files made the paranormal cool and sexy.

Man and Man's Best Friend: An Art Project

Can you spot the dog photo?

Swiss photographer Sebastian Magnani has created a series of dog and owner portraits in a project he calls "Underdogs". He photographed each owner and then dressed that owner's dog identically, even using wigs and hats. It's incredible how closely some of these people reassemble their pooches. Sebastian states "It is undisputed that the canines not only stir emotions and interest, but also our inner most needs. Dogs are considered loyal, selfless, trustworthy, life saving, fun and proud companions in a world where these values are gradually disappearing". Indeed. London Buses, The Only Way To Fly

Dynamo can fly! Peter Pan would be jealous. 

British illusionist Dynamo (I'm sure that's his real name) was seen using his powers for sort of good this week in London. As part of a Pepsi promotion, Dynamo levitated alongside a doubledecker bus while it was cruising around town. What's next Dynamo? I say levitating alongside the London Eye.


My Left Duck Foot

Our cute quotient has been met with this photo.

Thanks to 3-D printing, this is one lucky duck. Buttercup was born with a backwards left foot. His owner decided the best thing to do was to amputate it to prevent pain and infections. So Buttercup's owner contacted his local duck foot store for a replacement. Turns out there is no such thing, so instead he outsourced a new foot to a 3-D printing company. His new foot will be made out of a flexible silicone. Insert rubber ducky joke here.

He's Back. Again. Maybe.

Will the next killer robot from the future have an almost indiscernible accent?

Yet another "Terminator" reboot is in the works. Paramount announced this week that they are rebooting the killer robot franchise for a release date of summer 2015. It's unknown if the OG Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, will be back (couldn't help myself) for the new trilogy. 2015 is looking to be a huge sequel extravaganza with such movies scheduled as Star Wars Episode VII, Jurassic Park IV, Avatar 2 and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon II.



Britain's X Files

UFO seen flying over Stonehenge. And if you look closely you can see Bigfoot having a smoke.

There are so many UFO sightings in the UK that the government there officially closed its UFO investigation desk three years. What's more interesting, the proliferation of sightings in the UK or the fact that the British government had a department for this stuff in the first place? Britain's Ministry of Defense released almost 60 years worth of UFO reports on Friday, including photos and documents describing sightings.  David Clarke, a UFO historian, posted a video reviewing and discussing the documents. LA Pride: A Debriefing

LA Pride weekend is a long two days of fun, music, dancing and people. Lots of people. By the end of the weekend we've sold a lot of Teez, met a lot of people and need a foot rub.


Here are some fun facts about our LA Pride weekend!

1. I love the LA County Sheriff's department. Not only were they responsible for our first sales of the weekend (3 'America, Blowing Shit Up Since 1776' and one 'Some Girls Play Dirty' tank top), they also helped us out all weekend long, including finding me a close spot to park my truck during load out. Thanks Deputies.

2. Speaking of the Sheriff's Department, I watched several guarded yellow jump suit wearing prisoners moving some equipment around the festival on Saturday morning. Our tax dollars put to work. Love it.

3. We got another visit from one of our most loyal customers, Kris. Last year she showed us her "Not A Dude" tattoo.  This year she stopped buy to say hi and to pick up another shirt. Thanks Kris. See you next year.

4. We broke up a fight! Leah, my lovely assistant for the weekend, saw a fight break out right outside our booth. She jumped into action and broke up the fight (I helped a little) before the Sheriff's department could do anything.  The Deputy thanked her for it. Leah gets the MVP of the weekend.

5. A friendly and fun Aussie bought me a beer. Thanks Georgi! Just saying.

6. Out of the 48 hours of LA Pride weekend, I was at the festival for 29 of them.

7. Our best selling shirt was a tie between "Lipstick Tomboy" tank and "Some Girls Play Dirty" tank, second best was "Lipstick Tomboy" t-shirt and rounding out the top three was our "America, Blowing Shit Up Since 1776" t-shirt.

8. Celebrity sightings for the weekend, Pauley Perrette who plays Abbey on NCIS and... Jesus!

9. We had some awesome neighbors including Underwear Society, Bent-Con and Spare Parts Hard Wear. Check them out!

10. When your booth is set up across from a radio station's tent you witness a lot of impromptu dance parties.

Top 5 Things I Love About WonderCon

We are 1 day away from the madness that is WonderCon so here are the top 5 things that I'm looking forward to the most.

5. TomboyTeez Sightings! There is nothing cooler than seeing one of our Teez on a con attendee. It makes me happier than a nerd at a convention.

4. Costumes. Gods bless Cosplayers! There is no better place to people watch than in the booth during WonderCon. Some costumes are super accurate, some are incredibly revealing and other are head scratchers. Never a dull moment.

3. Other Cool Vendors! There is never a lack of cool vendors to check out. You can shop for lightsabers, vintage toys and of course comics! I always have to limit myself to only buying one thing And I always cheat.

2. Special Guest Sightings! You never know who's going to stroll past the booth. Stan Lee and Jane Espenson have been a few favorites.

1. Nerds! I love spending time with my people. And the conversations that I find myself in are so much fun. Nothing like a serious nerd conversation.

TomboyTeez Across The Pond

I just got back from Europe and I had a blast. I brought a slew of TomboyTeez with me to wear around town but it was not exactly t-shirt weather. It averaged around 35F degrees in both London and Paris. That's cold in my book but my girlfriend, the Canadian, insisted that is was just "chilly". You can call it whatever you want but I was bundled up the whole time. So you'll have to trust me when I say I'm wearing some great Teez. We caught up with some of our British friends in London (and loyal TomboyTeez-ers) and I even hand delivered a shirt to one of our Free Shirt Friday's winners. For the record, this shipping method is very expensive and not always available. 

We had a great time in London then we headed across the Channel to Paris. It's a beautiful city full of history, great art and delicious baked goods. And we met some very cool people. We ran into a woman from Santa Monica who's been living in Paris for 30 years. Overall it was a fun trip and a great holiday before our event season ramps up. I can't wait to go back. In warmer weather. Thanks Europe, see you next time.

Getting To Know TomboyTeez

Cat Crimins is the Tomboy In Charge here at TomboyTeez.com and she's volunteered to be our next subject in the Getting To Know Us series.

Why did you decide to start TomboyTeez?

I've always loved t-shirts and the idea of designing my own shirts was one of those 'one day I'll do that' sort of thing. Then that day came and I realized I wanted to be my own boss and make a living doing the things I love. So I created the perfect job for myself. And at the same time I get to help tomboys everywhere express themselves and feel comfortable in their own skin. Win win.

Why name your company after tomboys?

I've been a tomboy my whole life. Most of my female friends are tomboys, gay and straight. It's a big part of who I am and how I present myself to the world. So when I was thinking of names for the company it was a no brainer. When you think of a tomboy's uniform you think t-shirts.

What does being a tomboy mean to you?

I guess its the perfect word to describe who I am. What else would you call a girl who loves sports and sci-fi and doesn't wear makeup everyday. Besides awesome. 

If you could be any animal in the world, what would you be?

North American domestic house cat. Looks like a permanent vacation to me.

Which TomboyTee is your favorite?

This is an impossible question but if I have to answer it I would say it's a tie. One of the first designs we ever had on the site was Not A Dude. This shirt was one of the original inspirations for the company because I get called sir all the time. So I feel like this is sort of my favorite by default. But I wear all of our shirts and the shirt I've been wearing the most lately is our Tracker Jacker shirt. I tend to wear our most recent shirts the most. 

Who is your favorite tomboy in history? Favorite tomboy right now? 

My favorite tomboy from history is Amelia Earhart. That's an easy one. My favorite tomboy right now is probably Sam Gordon, the 9 year old football phenom. Not only is she a natural athlete but she's excelling in a boy's sport. That's not an easy thing. She's doing what she loves and I hope she goes as far as she wants to within the sport of football.

What’s one thing people don’t know about?

Well it's probably no surprise that I'm a Star Wars fan but I have a pretty 

extensive collection of Princess Leia collectibles. I tend to go for the more obscure stuff. Vintage Leia shampoo, tooth brush, bar of soap in the shape of Leia. The older and the weirder the better. And I love Carrie Fisher. I met her once and I happened to be wearing a Princess Leia shirt at the time. She was awesome, signed an autograph and didn't call me a weirdo or anything.

Artist Kimber Grobman

Kimber Grobman is responsible for the art of some our original designs. We sat down with her recently and talked Teez.

How did you get involved with TomboyTeez?

One day I was walking my dog and I passed by Cat's house, I started chatting with her girlfriend, telling her that I was an artist, she immediately introduced me to Cat and the rest was history! :)

Which Teez did you design?

I've designed several Tees, Robot: I heart Humans, Riot Girl, Greek for Life and Big Foot: I don't believe in you either.

What does being a tomboy mean to you?

That I can do anything I want! I don't have to conform to being a

girlie girl. Most of all I can play with power tools and look kick ass
doing it!

If you could be any animal in the world, what would you be?
I would be a Giraffe, I'm pretty short so it may be nice to have a
different perspective on things!

Which TomboyTee is your favorite?

Riot Girl for sure! Its the first one I did for TomboyTeez and its
very much my style that I love to draw in, PLUS she's a bad ass!

What advice do you have for young aspiring graphic designers?

Keep at it, draw, draw and draw some more! Draw till you think your fingers will fall off. Don't get discouraged by a lot of No's, for
every 50 No's you'll get 1 Yes but it may be the best yes you could
ask for! Always try new things and don't be afraid to approach things from every possible angle, you'd be surprised what people will be drawn to!

The Real Dottie Hinson, Lucy Lawless, Boobs And A Few Other Stories You Might Have Missed

Here are a few news stories you may have missed this week.


1. League of Her Own

Lavone paire Davis, left. Gina Davis as Dottie Hinson in A League of Their Own.

Lavone "Pepper" Paire Davis died on February 2, 2013 at the age of 88. She was one of the 

inspirations for the character Dottie Hinson in the 1992 film, "A League Of Their Own". Lavone played professional baseball in the All American Girls Professional Baseball League and by all accounts she was one of the best female baseball players of the day.

She started her 10 season career in the AAGPB at age 19. "I know what it's like for your dream to come true, mine did,"  she told the AP in 1995.  "Baseball was the thing I had the most fun doing. It was like breathing." 

Rest in peace, Pepper. See you in the great big ball park in the sky.



2. He's A Dog-Person

3. She Fought the Law and Lawless Won.

Last February television actress, Lucy Lawless, joined a handful of other Greenpeace activists in protesting Shell Oil's plans on drilling in the Arctic by boarding the Noble Discoverer and delaying it's voyage. Lawless and the six other activists spent 77 hours aboard the ship, perched on top of a 174 foot tall tower.

Lawless and her compatriots were sentenced this week in Christchurch, New Zealand. 120 hours of community service and a $547US fine isn't bad considering the group was facing 3 years in prison and over $500,000 in reparations that Shell was demanding.

The Bush Family's email was hacked this week. Among all the personal details of the twice former first family's lives that were exposed, nothing is as interesting as some of George W. Bush's paintings. They appear to be self portraits. In the bathroom. He's actually quite good but the questions is why the bathroom? Maybe it is the solitude and privacy that the room offers. No one can make jokes about you when you are alone in the bathroom. Well at least not before this week.




5. Two Boobs. Oh and a topless chick.

If you had asked me who's the coolest guy in Hollywood was I would have said Leo DiCaprio. Until I saw this.

Leo and friend Jonah Hill have taken their talents to South Beach. They were recently photographed going for a swim together in Miami with their shirts on. OK, fine. Maybe they're concerned about UV rays. Fair enough.

They are then joined by a topless brunette. I would think that Leo sees boobs all the time. No big deal. In one of the photos Leo is pointing towards the young lady in all of her topless-ness. Then after the brunette swims away the two friends high five. To be fair they could be high five-ing because of anything; a good joke, the weather, looking forward to their dinner plans that evening. Or it could be because of boobs. I suppose we'll never know. But my questions is would George Clooney ever be photographed high five-ing over boobs? I vote no.
